Blogging is all about getting out opinions out there to be read by others. Some people have more opinions on many topics, while others prefer to blog about topics that are always changing, like the news. If you want to talk about the hottest topics that are hitting the news, there are certain things you can do to make sure you attract a lot of readers. Gathering readers is the goal of every blogger, so read on to find out what you can do to be successful.
Find a Niche
Bloggers find success by finding niches and exploiting them. Only rarely do they manage to attract a lot of readers if their attention wanders from one subject to the next. Your best bet is to write about something you're interested in. If you're a lawyer in Ontario, you might blog about the law. You will find that some companies, like Builder's Choice, blog about newest products and research findings for hvac units to keep their clients in the loop. If you love to read books, you might start a book review blog. If you've got several that you're considering, check into how much competition you have in each subject and choose the one that's most underrepresented.
Keep Up to Date
Once you've chosen your niche, you need to make it your business to keep up to date on the news for that topic. Create an RSS page full of feeds from relevant news headlines so you can get all your news or ideas in one place. You don't have to read every article, just the headlines, and delve further into anything that seems important. This is how you will form the opinions you intend to blog about and how you generate the expert knowledge that will make people want to follow you.
Blog Often
Most people have day jobs, so no one expects you to post every hour, or even every day. But if you want to talk about hot topics in the news, you have to strike while the iron is hot. If you blog about a news item that was released last week, everyone will have moved on already. You need to have time to read the article, form your opinion, and write your post, so three times a week is probably the idea schedule.
Have Inflammatory Opinions
If you have the same bland opinions as the bulk of the populace, your readers (the few that you manage to attract) will quickly tune you out. But if you have a funny, unique, controversial viewpoint, people will start wondering what all the fuss is about and tune in just to see what you'll say next.
